The
Mayor's Cup found in 1976, and the National Soccer Hall of Fame
have been intertwined almost from the beginning. The
Mayor's Cup was the first truly national collegiate soccer
tournament, attracting outstanding teams from across the country
to battle the local sides - Hartwick College and Oneonta State -
at a time when both were top NCAA Division I teams.
Among the teams
that have the trip to Oneonta are the University of Virginia,
American University, San Jose State, Alabama A&M, Notre
Dame, North Carolina, and closer to home, Penn State, Cleveland
State, and Rutgers. These teams among the hosts, have
given The Mayor's Cup its well-deserved reputation as one of the
top tournaments in collegiate soccer.
In 2005, the men's
side of the tournament will be celebrating 30 years while
the women will reach its tenth year as a viable tournament
nationally.
