The Akers Era: The Early 1990's

The kick start of women's soccer here in the United States started in the late 80's and early 90's with Michelle Akers. Akers was one of the most graceful and hardworking soccer players of all-time. She scored one of the most important and influential goals in the history of the United States and the sport of soccer when she hit home the winning goal in the 1991 Women's World Soccer Championships (later named Women's World Cup). Michelle was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.
