John W. Woods


Woods played for Nottingham University before emigrating to the United States.

Born: Nottingham, England

Organized and played for a team in Bridgeport, Connecticut and later played for Gratztown in Western Pennsylvania. Turned to refereeing after this playing days were over and was a referee in the Press League of Pittsburgh until 1924. Later became president of the Illinois Referees Association and continued as an arbiter until 1937. Served on the Illinois Soccer Commission starting in 1934 and coached the Oak Park High School team of Illinois for 26 years during which time his teams won 11 championships. Served for many years as chairman of the National Junior Cup but is perhaps best known as the coach of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in Helsinki.
