August Steuer


Came to the United States in November of 1923 and shortly thereafter was instrumental in forming FC Austria of the German-American Football Association of New York.

Not long after Steuer joined the Executive Board of the GAFA an organization he served in various capacities, including president until his death. His work in sports, used by him to promote international good will, was soon recognized on both sides of the Atlantic and he was decorated by both the German and United States governments. He served as Honorary Commissioner of Public Events for the City of New York under both mayors Wagner and Lindsay and as an advisor on immigration matters to President Lyndon Johnson. The German national soccer association, the Deutscher Fussball Bund, recognized him with honorary membership, as did the Southern New York State Association.
