Arrived in the United
States in 1891 at the age of 18 and started playing with the
Philadelphia Athletics who won the Pennsylvania League the
following year.

He later played with the Philadelphia team of
the American Association and then joined the newly organized Manz F.C. which won the American Challenge Cup in 1897. He
then moved on to play for Horace Fogel, Clement, Beecroft,
Thistles, British-Americans and the Eagles. Led the
Philadelphia attack against the touring English clubs, the
Pilgrims in 1909 and the Corinthians in 1911. In 1911 became
assistant coach to Douglas Stewart at the University of
Pennsylvania, a position he held for 28 years. However, his
greatest claim to fame was as coach of the 1934 United States
World Cup team in Italy. Later became president of the
Referees' Examining Board and president of the Referees
Association.
