George Matthew Collins


Played as a schoolboy in Scotland and came to the U.S. in 1907. Played for the Boston Rovers and Charlestown as a winger and a halfback and was known as "Old Stonewall".

Born: 1888 - Rothesay, Bute, Scotland

Died: June 30, 1950 - Boston, MA

Organized the Massachusetts State Association and was secretary for nine years. As a delegate to the United States Football Association, he assisted in creating the Amateur Cup competition, but is best known as the manager of the 1924 U.S. Olympic team at the Paris Olympics of 1924. Third vice-president of the USSFA in 1916-17 and the soccer writer for the Boston Globe from 1914 until his death in Boston at the age of 62.
