Jack Maher


Arrived in the United States in April 17, 1921 he played for the Chicago Thistles from 1921 to 1923 and then organized the Western Electric team and was its player-coach for many years.

He later became the trainer for the famous Chicago Sparta club in their professional years from 1927 to 1938, and was with the club when they won the U.S. Open Cup in 1938. He was also the trainer for the Illinois All Stars when they beat the touring Vienna Hakoah club in 1926. A tireless worker for soccer in the Chicago area he was president of the Peel Cup Association for 10 years and chairman of the junior association for 12 years. He later turned to refereeing was in charge of the U.S. Open Cup final of 1948 between St. Louis Simpkins-Ford and New York Brookhattan. He was also president of the Illinois Referees' Association and the National Soccer League of Chicago and on many committees.
