He scored on his debut on
May 17, 1978, against the New England Tea Men, and ended the season with 19
goals in 22 games. In seven seasons with the Sting, Granitza scored a
total of 128 goals during regular season play and added 13 more in the
playoffs. He led the Sting to two NASL Championships, the first was
Soccer Bowl '81 over the New York Cosmos, the second in 1984 in a two-game
series against Toronto Blizzard. During the 1981 playoffs, Granitza
scored seven goals in ten games. Noted for his powerful free-kicks, he
played for Rochling Volkingen, DJK Gutersloh, TSG Eintracht Dortmund and VfB
08 Lunen before being signed by Hertha Berlin. Originally a central
striker, he played behind the front men in the latter days of his
career. Strangely enough, despite his goal scoring prowess and his
importance to the Chicago franchise, Granitza was never selected to an NASL
First All-Star Team.
