Paul Child


One of the top goal scorers in NASL history, Paul originally cam to the NASL in 1972 from Aston Villa (English Football Club), on loan to Atlanta Chiefs.

Born in Birmingham, England, Child never played in a Football League game for Aston Villa, but made a name for himself in ten seasons with five different NASL clubs, three of them in Atlanta. Child also managed to play two internationals for the United States (against Canada and Poland in 1973). Child, at that time playing in the Aston Villa reserve team, made his NASL debut May 6, 1972 against Montreal in Atlanta and went on to score eight goals in his first season, three of them in one game against Dallas. The following year, ownership of the Atlanta franchise changed hands and the team became known as the Apollos. In 1974, Child was traded and began his first of six seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes. It was on Memphis Rogues in 1980, but when the Memphis franchise was moved to Calgary for the 1981 season, Atlanta once again his playing rights. In his ten seasons in the NASL, Child scored 102 goals in 241 game was named in the League's First All-Star Team in 1972 and 1974. When his playing career ended coached the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League.
