Alex won a Scottish schoolboy international cap against Wales before his family emigrated to the United States in 1921.

He became a U.S. citizen in 1922. Wood grew up in Gary, Indiana where he attended Emerson High School and worked for the Union Drawn Steel Company. He began his first class career with the Bricklayers in nearby Chicago and played in the U.S. Open Cup final of 1928. Later he moved to Detroit to play for Holley Carburetors, and he was playing in the Motor City at the time he was selected for the national team. On returning from Montevideo he played for Brooklyn Wanderers in the ASL before crossing the Atlantic to play for Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Colchester United. He returned to live in Gary in 1939 where he worked for the U.S. Steel Corporation until he retired in 1970.
