Bertrand A. Patenaude


A member of the great U.S. World Cup team in 1930, Bert was a prolific goal scorer and became the first player to register a hat trick in a World Cup match when he scored three goals against Paraguay at the Parque Central Stadium in Montevideo.

He began his ASL career with Philadelphia in 1928 before moving on to play for J&P Coats, Fall River Marksmen, Newark Americans, New York Yankees and New York Giants. In the ASL between 1928 and 1931 Bert scored 114 goals in 158 league games. He won U.S. Open Cup winners medals in 1930 and 1931 with Fall River and scored five goals in one game in the first leg of the 1931 final against Chicago Bricklayers. He won a third Open Cup winners medal in 1935 with St. Louis Central Breweries and was a member of the St. Louis Shamrocks team defeated by the Philadelphia German-Americans in the 1936 final. In 1937 he was a member of the American Soccer League All-Star team that played Charlton Athletic and in 1939 the Scottish F.A. team.
