Geoff Coombes


Coombes grew up in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England where he played Rugby and Soccer for his school.

Position: Forward/Half Back

Played in the Berks and Bucks minor final, and later was offered a trial with Nottingham Forest. He moved with his parents to the United States in 1935 and in 1939 and represented Michigan against the touring Scottish F.A. team, scoring Michigans only goal in a 7-1 defeat. Served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was stationed in California. After the war, he worked for the Palmer Bee Company in Detroit, Michigan, the major manufacturer of conveyors in the United States at that time. In 1946, he became a member of the Chicago Vikings team that won the U.S. Open Cup. Later on that same year, he played for the Detroit Wolverines in the North American Professional Soccer League. He continued his career in Detroit the following year in the NAPSL as a member of the 1947 Pioneers when the Detroit franchise changed hands. In 1950 he was selected to the U.S. Men's National Team for the World Cup finals in Brazil.
