He had an
eight year career from 1976 to 1983 with the New York Cosmos after playing seven seasons for Lazio in the Italian Serie A, and playing
for Italy 14 times, including appearances in the 1974 World Cup. In his eight years, Chinaglia scored
242 goals, second only to Archie Stark’s 253 goals in first division
profession soccer
in the United States. He led the NASL in scoring in 1978, 1979, 1980, and
1982. He also had 124 assists in his career, including 37 in 1980. At the same time the New York Cosmos
team won NASL championships in 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1982. Chinaglia
scored 24 or more goals in 6 straight seasons, with the greatest year
being 1980 when he scored 32 goals in 32 games during the regular season
then followed it with 18 goals in
seven playoff matches. Chinaglia was a first team NASL All
Star in 1976, 1978, 1979,1980, 1981, and 1982 and the league’s Most
Valuable Player in 1981. Chinaglia’s international career includes stints
with Massese
and Internapoli in Italy, after beginning his career
with Welsh club Swansea Town in 1964. He played 14 international matches
for Italy, including two games in the World Cup finals of 1974.
