Joseph Carenza


A player and administrator in St. Louis for many years. After Navy service in World War II, played for St. Margaret’s Senior CYC team.

In the late 1940s, advanced to the St. Louis Major League, playing for Steamfitters, Patterson Ford and other clubs. A member of the St. Louis Zenthoefers team that upset Germany's Eintract Frankfurt 2-1 in St. Louis in 1951. He had a trial with the U.S. Olympic team in 1952 and played for the St. Louis All-Stars against Liverpool in 1953. Joined St. Louis Kutis in 1954 as player-coach, winning National Amateur Cup championships in 1956 and 1957, and the National Open Cup title in 1957. Moved to St. Louis Simpkins in 1958. Selected for numerous St. Louis all-star teams. Coached college soccer from 1960-1968. Later became executive sports director of the Catholic Youth Council, a major force in St. Louis soccer.
