Rudy started playing the game at age six in Austria and continued playing when he moved to Chicago in 1958.

He immediately joined the Schwaben team in Chicago's National League and was a member of the clubs U.S. Amateur Cup winning team in 1964. A forward early in his career, when once led the NSL's major division with 24 goals in 21 games, he was switched to midfield later with great success. A member of the U.S. national team in World Cup qualifying in 1972 and in the series of internationals played in 1973 he also played for the United States in the qualifying rounds of the 1968 Olympics. When the Chicago Sting of the NASL was formed in 1975 he was one of the first players signed, seeing action in 16 games, and continued to play for the club in 1976.
