He made his national team
debut against Mexico in 1965 and scored five goals in ten World Cup
games, plus two more in non World Cup internationals. Most of this came
at a time when the U.S. did not play a lot of internationals. Roy played
for several teams in the National Soccer League of Chicago including Hansa and then for the Chicago Spurs of the National Professional Soccer
League (NPSL) of 1967, when he was named the league Rookie of the Year. When the
Spurs moved to Kansas City a year later he remained with the team, then
went on to play for the St. Louis Stars (1971-73) and Chicago Sting
(1975) of the North American Soccer League. In 1979 he became coach of
the Sting and in 1981 his team won the Soccer Bowl and finished the
season with a 23-9 record. For his efforts he was named "NASL Coach
of the Year". A second NASL championship came his way in 1984 when
in the last year of the NASL Chicago beat Toronto Blizzard in a two game
final.
