History of the FIFA Women's World Cup


The FIFA Women's World Cup's has been contested on five occasions with the USA earning two championships (China '91 and USA '99), Germany two (USA '03 and China '07) and Norway one (Sweden '95). The 2003 Women's World Cup featured 16 teams for the second time, after seeing 12 compete in both 1991 and 1995. The United States became the first nation to host two Women's World Cups when the Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak forced the event to be moved from China in 2003.

Team Records
The United States is the only country to win this prestigious competition two times (1991, 1999). USA holds the record for the most goals in a single Women's World Cup when they scored 25 in 1991 (China). The largest margin of victory in a Women's World Cup match happened twice. Sweden beat Japan 8-0 (1991-China), and Norway over Nigeria 8-0 (1995-Sweden). In the 1995 Women's World Cup Norway only allowed one (1) goal throughout the entire tournament (outscoring their opponents 23-1 in six matches).

Individual Records
United States forward/midfielder Mia Hamm holds the record for most points by a player throughout the history of the Women's World Cup. Michelle Akers of the United States holds the record for most goals scored in one Women's World Cup with 10 (1991-China).
