The
National Soccer Hall of Fame will host the New York State Public
High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Coaches Clinic on
Friday, May 20th. Hall of
Famer
Paul Caligiuri
(Class of 2004), current men’s and women’s soccer coach at Cal
Poly Pomona will be the keynote speaker for the event, providing
both a lecture section and an on-filed session. “ I am looking
forward to working with the coaches, “ Paul said in accepting
the invitation to speak. “I firmly believe we need to find ways
to teach the skills and tactics of soccer through game playing.
I want to share my philosophy and some specific games I use to
coach my players.”
“We anticipate another large
turnout,” Mike Andrews, Section IV soccer coordinator and local
organizer, said. “Each year we have seen the attendance for this
clinic grow. It is a testament to the Hall of Fame’s drawing
power and the Hall’s ability to attract some of the best coaches
and teachers of soccer in America!”
Caligiuri
starred for the U.S. Men’s
National Team in the 1980's and 1990's, famously scoring the
game winning goal against Trinidad and Tobago in 1989 that sent
the U.S. to its first World Cup finals in 40 years. Following
the 1990 World Cup, he played professionally in Germany before
returning as a founding player to Major League Soccer in 1996.
He concluded his MLS career in 2001, playing his last game in a
Los Angeles Galaxy victory in the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S.
Open Cup. MLS Commissioner Don Garber said, as he presented Paul
for induction into the Hall of Fame, “Paul Caligiuri is the
reason we build Halls of Fame."
Besides
Caligiuri, this year's
clinic will feature Binghamton University's Men's
Soccer Coach Paul Marco, Farmingham State's Goalkeeping Coach
Christopher Benjamin, Connecticut Jr. Soccer Association
Director of Coaching Jim Lennox, Niskayuna Girls Head Coach
Bryce Colby, and NYS Soccer Rules Interpreter Kevin McGoff.
