Ethan
Zohn, CBS’ Survivor: Africa Champion, will appear at the
National Soccer Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 16 at 7:00pm in
conjunction with the
Girls' College Showcase Tournament.
“We have been
working with Ethan and
GrassRoot Soccer for more than a year to find the right
event and date,” Director of Operations
Kathryn Dailey said. “He has been so busy from his
appearances in subsequent Survivor series to his commentary on
the World Cup to his regular charity work in Africa. It has been
a challenge to find the right event on an available date. This
will be an appearance that everyone will want to attend. And now
he has added host duties on the MSG Network’s Metro Soccer
Report!”
Zohn
was a high school and collegiate soccer player before continuing
his playing career as a professional for the Highlanders
Football Club in Zimbabwe and the Cape Cod Crusaders of the
United Soccer Leagues. While playing in Zimbabwe he saw first
hand the devastating effects that HIV/AIDS was having on the
indigenous population. The win in Survivor: Africa presented
Ethan with an opportunity to create a non-profit foundation,
GrassRoot Soccer, an international HIV/AIDS awareness and
educational organization, with Dr. Thomas Clark, M.D., Kirk
Friedrich, and Methembe Ndlovu, teammates from Highlanders Club.
The mission of
GrassRoot Soccer is to help educate people about the
worldwide problem of HIV/AIDS and about the work that is
currently being done to fight it.
“I look
forward to sharing the
GrassRoot Soccer message with the players attending the
tournament that weekend and with the people of Oneonta,’ Ethan
said. “While our mission was born out of the frightening
experience of seeing some of our teammates and friends “get
sick” then die, we soon realized that we had a whole world to
educate. In the past year we have created new programs to bring
our knowledge about HIV/AIDS to every corner of every country.
Sadly, it seems a mountain higher that Everest, but we are
committed to going wherever whenever we can to fight this
scourge on humanity. I hope the entire community of Oneonta will
join me at the Hall of Fame for a night that celebrates the
richness of life and the importance of being sure you can enjoy
it for a full lifetime!”
