Big 3 Induction Class of 2004


On August 14th, the Fifth Annual Big 3 Banquet will be held at the National Soccer Hall of Fame. At this banquet the American Youth Soccer Association (AYSO), the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials (NISOA), and the National  Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) will gather to enshrine their organizations' 2004 Inductees.

AYSO

John Enroth

Enroth spearheaded development of AYSO's referee assessment program. He joined the National Referee Commission in 1987. In Arizona he was Section Director of referee assessment. In 1994, after a brief hiatus, he rejoined the National Referee Commission and served on its Technical Committee from 1994-2003 while he was National Director of Referee Assessment.

Carin Jennings-Gabarra

Jennings began her career playing AYSO soccer in Region 10-Palos Verdes. She was a four-time All-American both in high school and at the University of California-Santa Barbara. On the United States national team she won the Women's World Championship in 1991 and was named the Most Valuable Player, and then won an Olympic Gold Medal in 1996. Carin was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2000, and then received the Hall of Fame's prestigious Medal of Honor along with her 1991 teammates.

Bill McLean

McLean organized Region 79 in 1975, the first AYSO region in New England. A year later he influenced the National Board to create Section 3, which covered all areas outside of California. In 1977 he became its first Director. McLean was elected to the National Board in 1977 and served as Vice President.

NISOA
Brian Hall

Hall began his soccer career on AYSO fields at the age of 14. A NISOA member since 1979, he earned his National Referee Badge in 1988. Hall has refereed a total of 11 college national championship matches, including three Division I College Cup Finals. In 2002 he reached the pinnacle officiating at the FIFA World Cup Final in Korea/Japan. He was named MLS Referee of the Year in 2003.

Joseph Manfre

Manfre has been a member of NISOA since 1975, earning his National Referee badge in 1984. He has officiated in 19 consecutive NCAA Division I tournaments and has also refereed NCAA Division I and NJCAA finals. Manfre has served in executive positions in both the Maryland ISOA chapter and NISOA Executive Board. Among his honors he has received Maryland's Ray Kraft Referee Award and is a member of the Maryland Hall of Fame.

Paul Tamberino

Tamberino served at the National Referee level from 1990-2002. He earned the MLS Referee of the Year Award for four consecutive years, and officiated numerous matches. At the collegiate level he officiated for all the leading conferences on the Atlantic Seaboard including a NCAA Division III final as well as two NCAA Division I championship matches. His final match was in 2001 when he officiated at the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Donald Wilbur

Wilbur served NISOA at the highest level in a variety of capacities including National Referee, National Clinician and National Assessor. He has officiated the NCAA Division I men's and women's tournaments, the NCAA men's national finals and NAIA men's and women's national finals. Wilbur is the recipient of the Robert Sumpter Excellence in Teaching Award and is a member of the South Carolina Hall of Fame.

NSCAA
John McKeon

McKeon coached at Monclair State College (NJ), the University of Bridgeport, and East Stroudsberg State College (PA). During his 29-year career he amassed a 214-139-30 record. Highlights of his coaching career include guiding the University of Bridgeport to the first ever NCAA national championship match and winning 6 PSAC championships with East Stroudsberg. During his 12 years as Executive Director of the NSCAA, he laid the foundation that now supports the worlds largest single-sport coaching organization. In 1987he received the NSCAA Honor Award and was inducted into the NISOA Hall of Fame in 1995. McKeon passed away in December 2003.

Tim Schum

Schum served as the NSCAA president from 1982-83 and for 22 years was editor of the association's magazine "Soccer Journal". As coach at Binghamton University for 29 years he compiled a career record of 259-126-43, winning six SUNYAC titles and two ECAC crowns. He edited "The Soccer Coaching Bible", and "Coaching Soccer'' and co-authored "The First 50 Years" with Joe Beam. Schum received the NSCAA Honor Award in 1994.
