CHICAGO REGISTER A 2-1 WIN OVER SAPRISSA BUT DROP SERIES ON AGGREGATE

The Chicago Fire rallied back from a goal down in the first half to beat Deportivo Saprissa 2-1, but they lost 3-2 on aggregate in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Saprissa, who are one of the most dominant clubs in Costa Rica, scored an all important away goal when Alonso Solis found the back of the net in the 11th minute of play. Andy Williams brought the Fire level on level terms just ten minutes after the intermission, but the Fire still needed score at least three more goals due to the away goals rule. Defender Jim Curtin scored a late consolation goal to earn the Fire the victory, but it was to be to little too late. In the other semifinal match, LD Alajuelense also from Costa Rica defeated CF Monterrey 2-1 on aggregate to join Saprissa in the CONCACAF Champions Cup Final.


CHICAGO DROP 2-0 DECISION TO DEPORTIVO SAPRISSA IN CHAMPIONS CUP

The Chicago Fire dropped the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal to Deportivo Saprissa 2-0. Andres Nunez and Alonso Solis both scored in the second half for the Costa Rican side. Chicago, who were unable to score an all important away goal face a two goal deficit as the home-and-home series heads to Chicago. In the match there were three red cards two for Chicago and one for Saprissa. Fire captain Chris Armas and head coach Dave Sarachan were both sent off in the first half. The series will resume on April 21st at Soldier Field in Chicago. In the other semifinal match up, LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica defeated Mexican side Monterrey 1-0.

CHICAGO FIRE ADVANCE IN 2004 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP; SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES ELIMINATED

The Chicago Fire completed an improbable comeback in the CONCACAF Champions Cup with a 4-0 win over CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh. Chicago overturned a 5-2 away defeat and won 6-5 on aggregate over the side from Trinidad. Dipsy Selolwane scored two goals and added an assist to lead Chicago to the victory. Damani Ralph and Chris Armas also tallied for the Fire, who will take on Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica in the semifinals of the Champions Cup. The San Jose Earthquakes were less fortunate in their home tie with LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica. San Jose won their match 1-0, but were eliminated on a 3-1 aggregate. Brian Mullan scored the lone goal of the match at the stroke of fulltime for the Earthquakes. LD Alajuelense will face CF Monterrey of Mexico in the other semifinal.

SAN JOSE, CHICAGO DROP MATCHES IN 2004 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP

The San Jose Earthquakes and Chicago Fire of the MLS both lost in their first legs of the quarterfinals in the 2004 CONCACAF Champions Cup. San Jose dropped a 3-0 decision to LD Alajuelense 3-0 in Costa Rica. Erick Scott, Froylán Ledezma and Luis Diego Arnaez scored the three goals for LD Alajuelense. In the other match, Chicago Fire lost 5-2 to CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh in Trinidad. Jonathan Jaqua and Justin Mapp scored two important away goals for the Fire. Cornell Glen scored a hat trick to lead CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh and Kerry Moray added two more goals. Both Chicago and San Jose will be at home in the second leg of the quarterfinals on April 24th.
